Types of stones for building houses; The following Eight types of stones are the sum of commonly used stones in civil engineering works.

1. Basalt and trap
2. Granite
3. Sandstone
4. Slate
5. Laterite
6. Marble
7. Gneiss
8. Quartzite

Basalt and Trap

• Basalt and Trap are the structure is median to fine-grained and also compact. Their shade differs from dark gray to black. breakage and joints are common.

• The color differs from dark gray, greenish-gray, purple-gray to dark black. The peculiar gravity is 2.6 – 2.7. Compressive strength differs from 100 to 200 N/mm2. They are worn as roofing tiles, slabs, pavements, etc.

Laterite

It is a metamorphic rock (Laterite). It is having a penetrable and sponges structure. It accommodates a high percentage (%) of iron oxide ( Fe2O3). Its cast may be brownish, red, yellow, brown, and grey.
• Its specific gravity is 1.85 kg m-3 and compressive strength differs from 1.9 to 2.3 N/mm2. It can be easily dissension in blocks.
• With seasoning, it procures strength. When worn as building stone, its outer area should be plastered.

Marble

• This is a metamorphic rock (Marble). It can rest hold of a good polish. It is accessible in different pleasing shades like white and pink. Its specific gravity is 2.65 and compressive strength is 70 to 75 N/ mm2.
• It is worn for facing and decorative works. It is worn for columns, flooring, steps, etc.

Gneiss
